\title An Example of what you can do with HT.
\center
\bold
Welcome to HT - An Amiga Hypertext program
This is a quick demo, but should give you a good feel
for what is possible with HT.\bold
\format
To quickly let you know, links are shown in inverse video and can be
followed by double clicking the mouse on them. Scrolling is done with the
keyboard arrow keys, the scrollbar, or arrow gadgets (or even the numeric
keypad if you feel so inclined!).
Recently, the word \bold "Hypertext" \bold has been \ital widely \ital
used (and abused) in the computer press and even mainstream journals. If
you are not familiar, you may wonder what really \ital is \ital Hypertext?
The concept of Hypertext was born in the 1950's, and quite simply,
Hypertext is a way of presenting textual information with the added
benefits a computer can provide; with the \bold Amiga, \bold these benefits
aren't just limited to instant cross-referencing, but also include
pictures, animations, music, and several other types of computer "media".
\bold HT \bold is my idea of what Hypertext should be like for the Amiga.
Although it is certainly not ideal, HT provides a very rich set of features
for both Hypertext authors and Hypertext readers.
Unfortunately to fully demonstrate all of the features of HT would
require much more disk space than is possible. I've tried to highlight the
more important features, and provide good documentation so that it is easy
to utilize the additional features when you need them.
In \ITALIC HT \ITALIC you can text link to all sorts of things. For
example \BOLD sound\BOLD is a useful way to communicate. \ITALIC HT
\ITALIC will let you link text to \Sound { -p400 sounds/StarTrek.SND }
digitized sound.\endlink Using sound in this way is a simple method to
improve the impact of your hypertext documents.
Since everyone likes Amiga \BOLD Graphics, \BOLD we can't leave them
out. To demonstrate, here is a link from the word "gorilla" to a famous
Amiga picture of a gorilla. The \Show { pics/Gorilla } gorilla \endlink
is an intriguing beast.
\BOLD ARexx\BOLD is the scripting language of choice on the \ITALIC
Amiga \ITALIC (and rightly so). To further that popularity, \ITALIC HT
\ITALIC supports \BOLD ARexx \BOLD quite nicely. For example, a simple
double click on an ARexx link could launch an ARexx macro directly from
within the document you are reading. That same macro could then
communicate back with HT to have other documents loaded as needed. Those
of you with ARexx will find several ARexx macros in the Rexx drawer on the
disk. You can explore there to find out more.
Of course, there is also the \BOLD "hypertext" \BOLD part of HT! Links
can be to other text in other files. For example, to get started on the
real documentation to HT, you can \Link { Documentation/ht.doc } just click
here.\endlink HT doesn't hold a proprietary format on your documents
either, HT uses plain ASCII text files which everyone can produce easily.
HT also allows links to arbitrary external programs. For example, if I
wanted to let you run a text editor, I could do the following: \Run {
c/ed } Click here to run the text editor on this disk. \endlink Simple
eh?
HT doesn't forget \BOLD music\BOLD either. The \ITALIC Amiga \ITALIC is
capable of producing some very nice music, sooooooooo \ITALIC HT \ITALIC
lets you use it. Unfortunately, there is no room on the disk for a good
piece of Amiga music, but the capability is here.
Amiga \BOLD Animations\BOLD aren't forgotten, but again, lack of disk
space doesn't allow me to include an animation on disk which I could link
to. HT is certainly capable however, and a double click of the mouse is
all that would be needed to bring up any animation.
\center
\bold \ital What next ? \ital \bold
That concludes this \ital demo.\ital The \Link { Documentation/HT.doc
} documentation \endlink on disk is the main example of what some of the
possibilities with HT are. Work is progressing on an seperate \ital
Examples Disk, \ital but that is not currently ready. HT provides a lot of
functionality which, when used right, can be an impressive tool. Hopefully
you will be able to appreciate some of that power when going through the
hypertext documents on this disk.
